And, sorry, Scary. I don't care what you or UNR say... I am an expert. If you don't believe me, just ask me.

In many ways certifications are created to indicate that you know what you claim to know. In the working world, it can mean the difference between getting a certain job, or not getting it. I know a lot about computers, but I can never get a job in any sort of tech position because I do not possess any certifications. Of course this has come about because anyone can say they know a lot about computers, but there's the risk of loss of data which can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to either recover or swallow the loss of if you truly don't know what you're talking about. So certifications for computer repair and programming will at least serve to prove you have studied the subject at length and you are less likely to screw up.

Certifications are well and good for the paranormal, but it's a matter of wording that is the catch. I mean would you just grab anyone off the street if you have a problem you believe to be paranormal in nature and ask them to come investigate? Certification simply means that the subject has been studied and the individual possessing the certificate has demonstrated a certain level of knowledge and/or ability. It does not in any way signify that anyone has reached the end of their learning and they know it all. The paranormal is by no means the only subject that is constantly changing. Medicine changes constantly. Law changes. Education changes. Everything changes and just because anyone has a piece of paper denoting a degree or even a certification does not mean that there's no more learning to be done. Therein lies part of the problem.

Yes there will be costs involved. No one shares their time or knowledge for free. So it's not unreasonable that fees are charged.

So the thing to do is perhaps just call it a paranormal certification establishing that the possessor has studied through participation with an established investigation group and leave it that, but also stress to everyone that the learning doesn't end there. Not if you intend to be even a half-way reasonable investigator.

An expert is someone widely recognized as a reliable source of technique or skill whose faculty for judging or deciding rightly, justly, or wisely is accorded authority and status by their peers or the public in a specific well-distinguished domain.

You have a very good point, Andrasta...about the paranormal not being the only field that is changing constantly. And yes, certifications indicate to others that you have studied the field pertaining to the certification extensively.

My issue with a lot of these outfits that are claiming they can certify...charge a hundred bucks a pop..and do nothing that you can't do yourself. As UNR mentioned, there are some that do provide training...but what floored me about the one I mentioned in the original post is what they are expecting you to pay $100.00 for. For that price...at least provide something more than postage and introductions.

By the same token, I've learned all of my computer knowledge on my own, yet I'd have to pay far more than $100 for a piece of paper that tells others what I know.

There should be some main organisation that is the only group authorized to certify anyone. Not just any fly-by-night group who suddenly decides they need more money.

First off, there is nothing wrong with Fly By Night groups. Icontexto-emoticons-04-032x032

Secondly, this is where you have the problem with certifications - since there is almost no agreement on anything in the field, there will be no agreement on any kind of governing body. Maybe someday that will happen, but we are a LONG ways away.

There is SO much I can say to that, but the point is, we are ALL fly by night groups, - whatever we think we know, we probably don't.

For any of you that think you need a certification I found this FREE course. You can take it online or through email. Now it looks like a fun course for the weekend investigator. I don't agree with everything but its the right price. One thing I do like is it tells you how to investigate without spending a fortune in equipment.

Belief bias occurs when we make illogical conclusions in order to confirm our preexisting beliefs. Belief perseverance refers to our tendency to maintain a belief even after the evidence we used to form the belief is contradicted.

OMGZ all this time and I have not got my Enthusiast certificate but I do have a Dinosaur Hunting license but my Vampire hunters license is up next fall thats something you cannot just send in "you must have a refresher course" and get the free punch and cookie coupon off the comic book. I want my enthusiast certificate laminated in my a flip wallet so if anything paranormal should happen I can flip it open and say "Nobody panick" I am a professional!
I do the same when I see Dinosaur attacks makes it run smoothly.
