For about the past year or so I occasionally feel like there is a shadow the is behind me or over my head. Not metaphorically, a literal shadow. It is not all the time. I will also feel like someone is behind me at my desk at work, or someone walks by and brushes my hair, but I look and no one is there. The shadow is the thing I'm most curious about though. I should point out that the past year has been rough for me. I have dealt with anxiety and depression and loneliness. I sort of thought maybe that could play a factor, but I notice this shadow on good days too. I'm not scared of it, but when it does appear sometimes I feel a little more mellow, tired, or occasionally even a bit bummed out. . it varies sometimes. Lastly, the shadow doesn't take any specific shape that I'm aware of, I just feel like its just a "blob" behind me. I'm hoping someone will be able to give me some insight on what is going on. . Thanks in advance!
Our brains create misperceptions BEFORE we are consciously aware of seeing them so we believe what we are seeing is real (as if they came from our eyes). We do not notice misperceptions while we're having them. In certain cases we might spot them afterwards if something then appears strange, like the misperception disappears when looked at more closely. Misperceptions originate from our own visual memory so they look completely real to us.

Stress, Anxiety Depression, could be the source of these feelings. Something worth looking into.
Belief bias occurs when we make illogical conclusions in order to confirm our preexisting beliefs. Belief perseverance refers to our tendency to maintain a belief even after the evidence we used to form the belief is contradicted.

Wouldn't our brains perform misperceptions, rather than create them? I mean, your brain is simply taking the input data from our senses and interpreting it differently than it should be. A lot of the time, it isn't even a misperception unless your senses are delivering you inaccurate input. Which means that the brain itself isn't guilty of a misperception, your senses are guilty of the crime for misperceiving things. Your brain would have done its job properly, just with limited information.

Of course, I'm not saying that it isn't likely this is one of those cases. I just think it's important to note what's doing the fooling here. If someone thinks the problem is in their head, they'll be more likely to go and medicate where they aren't required to. OP, take things in steps. First, try to put this shadow in better light, and see what it is you are looking at. If you can get a better sight, sound, or smell out of it, you can better interpret what it is.
I think paranoia is playing an esteemed role here, whitemagick12. Since you've had a rough year, you may be under a lot of stress. Said stress can weigh you down and eat away at your mentality. Guilt can also play a big role in something like this. What and why do you feel guilty of as of late? Are you taking fault for something that actually happened that you had no control over?
