The Ghost Behind You
#1
The feeling of a presence occurs in several psychiatric and neurological conditions such as schizophrenia, epilepsy, brain trauma, and other conditions. It is thought that FoP parallels what happens in schizophrenics who hear voices and attribute them to external sources while, in reality, these voices are generated in their own minds but they failed to identify them. This misidentification also occurs in FoP when the individual fails to identify him or herself and attribute this to others.

Studying this phenomenon may help us to explain the hallucinations that occur in various conditions, and it might help those who experience them. Most importantly, studying FoP brings it from the paranormal and its explanations to science.

Belief bias occurs when we make illogical conclusions in order to confirm our preexisting beliefs. Belief perseverance refers to our tendency to maintain a belief even after the evidence we used to form the belief is contradicted.

I believe our surroundings can have a lot to do with it. Let's say you are alone in the house. It is late at night and you have to go down to the creepy basement for something. When you are coming back up the stairs you might feel a presence behind you which will cause you to pick up your steps; maybe even run back up the stairs.

It is the same thing when one is walking back from the outhouse just at the edge of the woods. You feel something creeping up behind you. You run up the porch steps...

The feeling that someone or some thing is behind you can happen to anyone even those free of psychiatric or neurological conditions. I know it has happened to me Wink

The presence of those seeking the truth is infinitely to be preferred to the presence of those who think they've found it. ~ Terry Pratchett
