The Witchcraft Acts
#11
Oh, that was sneaky. Because, most people back in those days could not read. So, how were they supposed to read a passage from the Bible? And those people who persecuted these people knew that, too.

I am sensitive when it comes to the Witch Trials. It is because I am a Christian Witch. Icontexto-emoticons-04-032x032

Not at all what I am saying. What I am saying is that we leave a state of nature and enter into commonwealths so that we can help the public good, or if you prefer Hobbes, to secure ourselves more so. When it comes down to it, in these commonwealths, the main thing to look after is the law. Whether a Hobbesian sovereign, or just a government based off of democracy, people breaking the rules of the law will be punished as the sentences have been placed. A commonwealth is a place where everyone has come into a society where everyone has agreed to accept following these laws. If you cannot follow the laws, or they restrict your belief in any way, this is not the commonwealth for you. You then have three choices: 1) Leave the commonwealth, and find another one more suitable to your beliefs and values; 2) Leave the commonwealth and remain in a state of nature yourself, or; 3) Stay in the commonwealth, and learn to conform to the values of the people inside of it.

This is not from a racist, elitist, or any prejudicial standpoint. This is simply from my studies of Poli-sci, and philosophy of law/government. The witches just lived in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

With respect, your understanding of Hobbes and absolutism is a little flawed. However, reasonable people can agree to disagree. I just do not find self exile a reasonable solution to the problems of those who disagree with or are suppressed by government, especially when you are under the thumb of the government, so to speak.

I'm sure, slaves would have loved to have said. "yeah, well, okay, we're digging this guy Hobbes and his idea of commonwealth and we're just going to go pick our own cotton, if you don't mind." Or gays in California saying, "Yeah, well, in our world we're married, so could I please just pick up my partner's social security check now that she's dead and can no longer support me?"

Pure theory must be married to the mechanics of the situation for it to work.

I would add that I have yet to meet a historian who believes that Hobb's ideas are translatable to modern times.

OMG! I found the last post that I was apart of before my other account couldn't log back in! To my recollection, it wasn't a ban. I was trying to log in, and it would say "Username or Password incorrect", then I'd try to change my password and it would say "Email does not exist". This look continued forever and I lost the time to try and work around it (I didn't want to create a new email haha)

I wanted to respond to this so much hahahaha.

*BUMP!* #WaybackPlayback
