Does Remodeling Awaken Spirits?
#1
One of the things I have been learning a lot about recently is just how noisy our homes are! Icontexto-emoticons-01-032x032 Many explanations have been discussed here as far as natural causes for strange sounds we might hear in houses. Often those 'bumps in the night' that are heard end up being due to water pipes, furnaces, water heaters, and the like.

A theory about hauntings that I have read for as long as I can remember is that remodeling can cause a spirit to awaken and become active. While it is not beyond possibility that is the case in some instances, I think it is important to learn what sounds can be caused from remodeling that have nothing to do with spirits and have everything to do with humidity and the expansion and contraction thereof.

I came across this link and thought I would share it, as I think it offers an explanation to consider when remodeling seems to have 'awakened' a home.

You also alter materials when you remodel, mixing old with modern. Changing the load bearing walls, altering the layout. When people open up an old wall many times it was plaster with lath boards underneath. These are actually much more soundproof from modern drywall, so in modernizing you allow more sound to enter. Lots of older lumber was hard woods where modern construction is a softer wood. this allows more movement and noise In hollow walls sound is often carried and amplified. New 2X4 studs also carry sound waves from the outside wall to the inside wall, just like a drum. A solid foam board between the walls and the studs will help reduce sound conduction. This approach also works on interior walls and ceilings.

Now on the other side when we remodel and replace old windows and doors with modern just the opposite takes place old windows allowed sounds in where modern are more sound proof. This allows us to hear sounds in the home we may have other wise ignored.
Belief bias occurs when we make illogical conclusions in order to confirm our preexisting beliefs. Belief perseverance refers to our tendency to maintain a belief even after the evidence we used to form the belief is contradicted.

If intelligent hauntings do exist,it seems reasonable that changes in familiar surroundings could generate activity.
Most things that go bump in the night are probably caused by the mechanicals or,as previously stated,by expansion & contraction of wood building material.
My personal expertise is in flooring products.
Hardwood flooring always expands & contracts. Depending on how it's fastened and the structual integrity of the subfloor that it's attached to - the movement may create sounds that you might think are footsteps.
The only wrong questions - are those that go unasked

Great responses, people! I can certainly see (in theory of course) that if spirits exist and are attached to their home...remodeling could "stir the pot" so to speak. But there have been some other really good suggestions to consider as far as natural explanations.

PontiacTempest, I hadn't even thought about that, but you're right..some of these molds contain neurotoxins, which could possibly cause a person to think they are experiencing the unexplained.

Again, thanks for the great responses! =)

Structural alterations can also force critters from insects to rodents to birds to re-evaluate their place in the structure of a home. These creatures may take days or even weeks to get settled again but in the meantime
they will be responsible for increased activity within the fabric of a building as they move about before either moving on for pastures new or finding a new location after the work has stopped.
IMO the increasingly widespread notion that structural alterations or disturbing the ground leads to increased or new paranormal activity lies with the media and with films such as the Poltergeist franchise and
more recently shows such as Ghosthunters etc who place these expectations and beliefs in the public domain without adequately offering a balanced explanation such as those we've seen mention in the above posts.
