is luke 16:19-31 a parable and literal? - batman lover - 12-29-2018

The reason i think luke 16:19-31 is both literal and just a parable is because of matthew 13:24-29.And matthew 13:36-43.

How does this fit into daniel 12:2?

From the Bible teaching I was taught as a child a parable is a real, literal event, unlike a fable, which is a fictional story. I think people differ on the translation or the intent of the translation as whether the torment experienced by the rich man is an actual burning or a torment from being rejected by God. I have met people that have both interpretations.

Historically, and with most fundamentalist religions, I think, the interpretation is that Hell is a literal burning fire and most descriptions in the Bible, taken literally, sound like exactly that. Theologians of the New Testament point out that accounts that are not literal are prefaced by phrases such as "liken to" or "as." If a fundamentalist reads scripture that says, for example, "a reed liken to a rod" he knows it wasn't literally one thing but was similar. Therefore many fundamentalists believe in a literal burning Hell.

Several more modern Protestant religions, however, have taken the position that the torment of the condemned after death is extreme sadness and depression resulting from being excluded from the presence of God and from the kingdom of God.

Somewhere between these two positions might be those that believe that Hell is only a temporary punishment after which a soul will be reconciled with God.
